WHAT DID I DO THIS WEEK?
Discussed problems and changes with Adam and Sid
Focused on Gameplay Design - filmed a stop-motion animation to demonstrate how things will work/breakdown of the experience.
Planned our development documentary
DISCUSSIONS
The first thing we did to begin Week 4 was inform Adam and Sid with our changes, discuss problems and gather suggestions for next steps. A lot has changed in the last few weeks, so it was good to hear advice from others and gain a little belief back! Sid talked us through the importance of continuing with the VR prototype, to have incase all else fails, this means we will still have a playable experience for our degree shows. He suggested to begin with this and think about expanding to projection later on. We then discussed the problems we were having with Adam, as well as our new game idea. He liked the idea and suggested ways we could go further with the art style/projection and suggested some useful tips. Lastly suggested to begin testing setups, to understand how projectors work and how we will go about this to achieve our player experience. Because of this, we have put it on our to do list to test with projectors in the upcoming weeks. Other than that, he told us to work around the limitations and think about other approaches!
GAMEPLAY DESIGN
With our idea, content and theme in place, we mapped out our experience on a wall, splitting the experience into 4 individual screens. Each screen consisted of a different variation of the environment, different assets and animations. We thought it would be best to split the environment into different sections to keep users engaged and interested throughout, to avoid losing interest. Once we had done this, I created a stop-motion animation of the experience to further demonstrate how the bird will traverse the 4 screens and collect snowflakes.
DOCUMENTARY PLANNING
With a little bit of time throughout the week, I began to plan our documentary to have this prepared for when we film in Phase 3. I listed out the things we needed to film, in order of how we should do it. We can refer back to this plan during filming when we reach the development stages and have more content to show.
WHAT DIDN'T GO WELL? / TEAM DECISIONS
This week went fairly slow, but mainly consisted of design principles and thinking, as well as discussing the problems with the project so far! We made the decision to really begin organising the development of all assets next week, starting with getting into contact with our Sound Designer.
STEPS FOR NEXT WEEK
Tasks scheduled for next week involve updating our Sound designer to ensure he is still available for sound production, and preparation for asset production. I am scheduled to begin the creation of our Art Bible, to guide the creation of assets and ensure the art style is kept consistent between us. As Art Lead, I will be responsible for visual design. We have also organised to get into contact with WSA Media Stores to borrow different projectors and a handful of media players to test different setups for the physical space.
HOW DO I FEEL?
I am feeling good this week, happier knowing we have a full gameplay experience mapped out, because I am aware of the different elements/components we need to make to fulfil our idea. This makes it much easier to develop, knowing exactly what we have to do. I am excited to begin next week, because I plan to experiment with art supplies to assist my production of the Art Bible, and narrow down eaxctly how to achieve our desired art style.
