Week 5:
Art Bible

Wednesday 2nd March 2022

WEEK 5 -

TO DO: CREATION OF ART BIBLE

PURPOSE FOR ART BIBLE

The purpose for an 'Art Bible' is to 'define the look of the game'. This will be a detailed document outlining the art style for our project Getaway, and include descriptions, mood-boards and colour schemes demonstrating the overall visual appearance and how to achieve it. As Art Lead/Director, it is my responsibility to direct the visuals for the game and provide team members with a guide in order to work consistently between us. In our case, I will be making this document to give Kiera a greater understanding around the style we are working in, so she can use the same techniques/methods as me. As we have decided to distribute asset creation tasks between us, this will be extremely necessary for development and time management. Last year, I found that creating an Art Bible (for project 'Anima Mundi') made things clearer for everyone, and team members found it much easier to work in line with a specific standard/expectation.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Today, I will be creating an Art Bible document including inspiration mood-boards for every aspect of the game as well as descriptions of assets and their expectations. I will also break down the art style and how we as artists, can achieve our desired style. My experimentation activity yesterday helped familiarise myself with traditional drawing methods which I plan to include in the document, and also provide Kiera with links to materials that we can both use. (Sketchbooks, paper and pencils). After I have produced the Art Bible, I plan to make individual 'Google Docs' for Asset Creation, testing and feedback and final outcomes. Meaning, we can keep things separate and know where to refer to for different things.

GOALS FOR THE DAY

Create a clear and distinct Art Bible to define the look of the game and include ways to achieve it. Once complete, creating individual Google Docs for an Asset List, outlining expectations and space for feedback/changes as well as a 'Completed Assets' document.

PLAN FOR THE DAY

  1. Produce an Art Bible - mood-boards, colour schemes, descriptions, textures, materials/equipment to use, asset list.

  2. Asset List and expectations document.

  3. Final Assets document.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?

TASK 1

TO DO: PRODUCE THE ART BIBLE

WHAT SHOULD THE ART BIBLE CONSIST OF?

The Art Bible must 'define the look of the game' by providing examples of the desired art style and guidance on how to achieve it. I will include:

  • Inspiration mood-boards for each asset we are creating. (Environment, Snow Bunting Bird, Ski village, Ski Lifts, Snowflakes, Clouds, Trees, Snowfall)

  • Art Style mood-boards - drawing techniques and textures

  • Tips for how to achieve this style - techniques, shading methods etc.

  • Supplies to use - good quality sketchbook and pencils, pencil type etc.

  • Concept examples - what I did and how I did it.

  • Scanning & Editing - tips and how.

TASK 2

TO DO: ASSET LIST DOCUMENT

WHAT IS THIS DOCUMENT FOR?

This document should outline each asset and their expectations. This should help us design our assets in line with their desired outcome. This document should also be used to check assets and fill in comments to provide feedback if any changes are necessary. I plan to use this document to check the quality of our assets and to ensure we have kept the art style consistent between us.

  • Asset list

  • Expectations of each asset - how it's meant to function in-game.

  • Design expectations - what it's meant to look like.

  • Artist - who the asset is assigned to for creation.

  • Date for completion

  • Feedback & comments

  • Mark progress - Red: Not started, Orange: In progress, Green: Complete.

TASK 3

TO DO: FINAL ASSETS DOCUMENT

WHAT IS THIS DOCUMENT FOR?

To track progress of our final assets and evaluate outcome to provide feedback. This is where we should send our assets once complete for review and easy access.

FINAL ASSETS DOCUMENT:

This document will be updated regularly.

NEXT STEPS

I have prepared all the documents we need to keep track of Asset Creation which should take place in the next few weeks. For now, we are scheduled to begin next week with a weekly discussion and talks with our tutors. As well as this, we are on schedule to begin testing with different equipment to find a suitable setup for the physical space, as this is most important at this current moment.
