WEEK 2

ACHIEVEMENT LOG

7th February - 13th February 2022

WHAT DID I DO THIS WEEK?

  • Reduced the size of our scope

  • Lots of brainstorming and idea generation!

  • Storyboarding, experience maps, gameplay loops

  • Refine our final scope

  • Setup Version Control via GitKraken

  • Recreated our project schedule & planning

IDEATION & REFINED SCOPE

This week Kiera and I focused our time reducing the scale of our scope, by identifying the strengths and weaknesses within our initial project proposal. We managed to remove unnecessary elements and began to generate a handful of ideas inspired by our previous research. To do this, we also focused on our own personal interests and thought about what we would want during times like this. This helped to create concepts and ideas for the theme of the space and its content. To assist my own process, I created experience maps and gameplay loops to be more direct with our idea to support development too. The idea we chose to run with was a concept involving influence over music, by flying a bird through an environment and collecting music-triggering items. This ties in our research into physical movement, music psychology and player agency/reward. Once we were happy with this choice, we finished the week by refining our project scope and recreated our project schedule. We assigned tasks to the design/development of our experience (Getaway) which we plan to expand on as we get nearer to development.

GITKRAKEN

We also had a lecture this week on Version Control. Adam talked us through setting up our GitKraken accounts, to allow us to keep track of version progress and make changes without interrupting development. This can also be found on my Week 2 Notion. Kiera (Technical Lead) will be in charge of our version control, uploading/updating this with every version of development from now on.

WHAT DIDN'T GO WELL? / TEAM DECISIONS

We didn't necessarily face any problems this week, but we are aware that we have a lot to do in a short period of time. Because of this, we have agreed to work according to schedule as much as possible, and when a task needs to be done, we will do it!

STEPS FOR NEXT WEEK

After discussions with Adam this week, Kiera and I have agreed to get into contact with Chris O Connor and Andy Brook next week to discuss the construction of our physical space, with further enquiries. Hopefully we can have the box build underway before Easter, if we still plan to go through with this. Now we have a suitable idea in place, we have scheduled to begin looking into the theme of the game next week, by gathering research through surveys and questionnaires. This should give us an idea of what kind of environment users would like to be transported to, during times of anxiety and stress. From here, we should make an informed decision based on the theme of the space and begin to research into this further. Kiera is to also begin prototyping the core interaction in Virtual Reality, as we felt this was good starting point to demonstrate our slow, gentle input idea, using touch controllers.

HOW DO I FEEL?

I feel better this week knowing we have an idea set in stone, and feel confident that we can get everything done to fulfil this idea. It's not too complex, but my concerns are mostly built around the physical space and how we go about getting this built and tied in with the gameplay itself. One step at a time, and next week I will focus on the theme, then we'll go from here!
